Teaching Philosophy
It is a joy for me to encourage students in self-compassion and patience as they learn to play an incredibly difficult instrument. I help students enjoy learning music in a positive, fun, and creative environment.
I intentionally tailor lessons to meet the needs & interests of each student, drawing from a breadth of music of different styles, from classical (Suzuki method & Essential Elements books), fiddle, worship, pop, etc.
Referencing Sanford's theory of student development (1966), I provide a balance of challenge and support."[To experience growth, students need a balanced amount of challenge and support as appropriate to the task.]"

My background
I studied violin with 4 different violin instructors starting at 9 years old, while growing in Virginia Beach, VA. The most influential was the legendary Dora Mullins, who greatly increased my caliber in playing during high school. I played with Symphonicity (the VA Beach Symphony orchestra) as a high school student, in various pit orchestras in college at the University of Virginia, and more recently for the pit orchestra of the Violet Musical that Live Arts hosted in Charlottesville, VA.
I acquired my B.A. in Psychology & Cognitive Science from UVA, and my M.Ed. in Higher Education & Student Affairs from the University of South Carolina. I have also been teaching violin at my home and at the Front Porch in Charlottesville for the past 4 years.
My breadth of experience in different facets of education and music have certainly molded me into a perceptive and unique teacher for the violin! I've learned how to develop a growth mindset in everything that I do, and aim to help my students with that as well. What a joy it is to teach and learn together!
During lessons at my home, you will encounter my two sweet cats, Ruthie and Esther - they'll likely come out to say hello.
With students of all ages, I am known to end lessons with words of affirmation and reflective questions ("what are you proud of yourself for today?"), stickers, a one minute dance party, and/or candy from the infamous candy jar.
She won our practice challenge! We learned the "Heartland" theme song together because we both love the show so much, haha
